County airports director quits, citing leadership concerns

View Comments The Ventura County airports director has resigned after a little over two years on the job, citing personal reasons but also expressing doubt about his ability to lead the county-owned airports in Camarillo and Oxnard. I didn t feel I could be an effective leader, Kip Turner said Thursday.  Turner, 53, declined to state any specific reasons for that doubt but said it was not tied to any specific event.  There s a lot of things, he said.  I don t feel comfortable talking about it.   His resignation came about a month after he suspended the development of a master plan for the airports for at least a year to broaden community consensus on the airports future.

Who is running for election in Ventura County

Seven top local officials plan to run for Ventura County  offices next June, including the Thousand Oaks mayor who is seeking a seat on the Board of Supervisors. Mayor Claudia Bill-de la Peña, a longtime Thousand Oaks councilwoman,  plans to run for Linda Parks District 2 seat centered in the city. Parks is set to step down in January 2023 under term limits. In the interim, she faces a recall attempt by groups opposed to the board s decisions in January to sue businesses that refused to shut indoor operations to curb the pandemic. Four county officials intend to seek re-election, according to interviews and campaign finance documents. They are Sheriff Bill Ayub, Clerk-Recorder Mark Lunn, Auditor-Controller Jeff Burgh and Assessor Dan Goodwin. Incumbent Treasurer-Tax Collector Steven Hintz did not return a call regarding his election plans.

View Comments Oxnard Airport s runway will be rehabilitated this year for the first time in nearly 20 years with $14.4 million in federal funding, officials said. The Federal Aviation Administration announced the award Thursday as part of $845 million in grants for projects to expand capacity, increase access and curb environmental harm at airports across the country. Ventura County s airports director Kip Turner said he expects construction to start by August and be done in four months  Workers will replace pavement on the entire 6,000-foot runway and upgrade drainage, signage and lighting.  County officials also requested but did not receive another $12 million to repave a taxiway that runs beside the runway and connectors between them. Turner said he expected to get that funding in the future.
