By Angel Madison of Redbook |
When Katharine Lee Bates wrote about purple mountain majesties and amber waves of grain, she was talking about the stunning natural beauty that makes up a large part of the United States. Each state has its own unique appeal, from spectacular sunsets in Florida to the northern lights in Alaska to never-ending fields of farmland to the sweetly simple small town charm that exists in tiny pockets of the U.S.

For 25 years, Max Hobart and Leslie Holmes have worked seamlessly together in their respective roles as music director/conductor and president of the Wellesley Symphony Orchestra, two consummate musicians so finely synchronized in running the venerated community orchestra that their passion for music infuses everything they do.
Earlier this year Hobart announced he would retire at the end of the current season, and last month Holmes said she was stepping down as well. It’s a bittersweet moment for each of them, especially with the pandemic curtailing the concert season, but the absence of a busy performance schedule has also provided time to reflect on the accomplishments of their tenure and their hopes for the future of the orchestra. Both are certain the WSO is in good hands, with a strong board in place and a search for a new music director underway.
