Hank Willis Thomas (born in Plainfield, New Jersey, 1976) received his BFA from New York University, and an MFA in photography and an MA in visual criticism from California College of the Arts. His first monograph, Pitch Blackness, was published by Aperture in 2008. His collaborative projects include the book and traveling exhibition Question Bridge: Black Males, the installation In Search of the Truth, and For Freedoms, the first artist-run super PAC, founded in 2016. In 2017, Thomas received the AIMIA | AGO Photography Prize. He is represented by Jack Shainman Gallery in New York and Goodman Gallery in South Africa.

10. “The Haunting” at Astor Place Plaza, New York To mark the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s death, students, faculty, and alumni of NYU Tisch School of the Arts will present immersive public art installation combining film, theater, photography, dance, costume design, set design, and music in front of the Astor Place Cube. The piece, conceived in collaboration with For Freedoms, incorporates Day of the Dead skull iconography and will be followed by a candlelight vigil. The organizers hope the performance will serve as a ritual that will not only help keep Floyd’s memory alive, but will continue the conversation about the need for justice and reform.
