Gatik s autonomous, middle-mile box trucks go electric

Dive Brief: Gatik is electrifying its autonomous box trucks, the company announced Wednesday. Meant for middle-mile operations, the truck has a 120-mile range and can fully charge in fewer than 1.5 hours, Gatik said. Gatik collaborated with Via Motors to make the vehicles. Gatik said the model provides significant emissions reductions, and savings on fuel and powertrain maintenance costs. Gatik will deploy the model for customers in New Orleans this month, according to the announcement. It is also working with customers to set up charging stations at distribution hubs and vehicle depots. Dive Insight: Gatik is known for its partnership with Walmart, taking the retailer s multi-temperature box trucks on autonomous short runs. This is the first time Gatik will combine driverless technology with an electric vehicle, and CEO and co-founder Gautam Narang said it fits with the company s existing strategy.

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc (NYSE:WMT) - Gatik To Deploy Electric-powered Autonomous Vehicles In New Orleans

Share: Autonomous vehicle startup Gatik is already proving its technology can work in middle-mile delivery, but now it is adding a fully electric vehicle to the mix. The company on Wednesday announced its electrification strategy, which includes the use of fully electric autonomous box trucks. The first vehicles will hit the roadways this month in New Orleans. Helping our customers as they meet their ambitious emissions targets is a key pillar of our long-term strategy. Our electric autonomous box trucks are defining a new frontier in sustainability while continuing to offer the cost reductions and shorter delivery times our autonomous solution is known for, said Gautam Narang, CEO and co-founder of Gatik. The B2B short-haul market is ideally suited to electric technology thanks to the route lengths involved. Trucks can charge while they re being loaded, enabling continuous service during operational hours.

Walmart s partnership with Gatik dates to the summer of 2019, beginning with a pilot that saw the startup s driverless trucks shuttle goods between a dark store and a Neighborhood Market in Arkansas. Business Insider spoke with Gatik cofounder and CEO Gautam Narang about his company and its ongoing partnership with Walmart. Gatik seeks to serve Walmart s middle mile needs by tackling fixed, repeatable routes, Narang said. The old architecture of the supply chain where you have this giant distribution center a few hours away from the city center does not work anymore, he said.
