In honour of International Women’s Day on March 8, which celebrates and highlights the women’s rights movement, we asked eight talents working within the Vancouver food world to dish on their favourite elements about working in the industry, their most memorable moments, words they wish they could have told to their younger selves and more. Here’s what they had to share.
Lori Joyce of BETTERWITH ice cream
Lori Joyce, co-founder of the super successful BC Cupcakes chain, is knocking it out of the park with her ice cream line Betterwith. The premium ice cream custard-style with a high fat content is made with traceable milk and zero preservatives, and is head and shoulders above the competition. Best of all: It’s low sugar and allllll flavour.

Lilian Umurungi-Jung of Mumgry
Lilian Umurungi-Jung created nut butter brand Mumgry after struggling to find healthy snacks during her pregnancy. There’s just the good stuff in this all-natural, low-in-sugar peanut butter that even garnered Beyoncé’s seal of approval: the former Destiny’s Child member included Mumgry on her list of Black-owned businesses last summer. Mumgry offers three flavours: peanut butter, peanut butter with chocolate, and the decadent chocolate pistachio almond.
