More cases of variant COVID-19 strains found in Mississippi

JACKSON, Miss The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) is reporting additional cases of two variant strains of COVID-19 in Mississippi.
Ten additional cases of the more infectious South African origin B.1.351 variant strain have now been identified, for a total of 12 cases. The 10 additional cases are associated with outbreaks in Bedford Care – Monroe Hall in Forrest County and Landmark Care of Collins in Covington County.

The Mississippi State Department of Health found 10 new COVID-19 South African variant cases among residents in long-term care facilities who were already fully vaccinated against the virus, the department announced Thursday.
Residents who contracted the variant are associated with outbreaks in Bedford Care Center Monroe Hall in Forrest County and Landmark of Collins in Covington County.
Most of the those infected with the South African variant had little to no symptoms, the department s Thursday news release noted. Two were hospitalized and one person died. While these illnesses are caused by variant strains, the outcomes of all these cases would likely be much more severe if they were not vaccinated, State Epidemiologist Paul Byers said in the release.
