Reeling in bass and hardware is what Washington students did on Saturday at the annual Iowa High School Bass Team Championships.
The Demon Bass Club claimed their second consecutive state title at Pleasant Creek Lake near Palo. The competition had a total of 20 boats from 11 different schools with two people in a boat. Each boat was allowed to catch five keeper bass with the heaviest taking home the crown. The top two boats from each school decided the team standings and Washington weighed in at 17.08 pounds compared to second place Independence with 11.54 pounds. John Prochaska and Kole Williams won the individual championship with five bass that amassed to 9.78 pounds. Charlie Henriksen and Noah Kleese finished fifth with five bass that weighed 7.3 pounds. No. 3 Penn State men’s lacrosse (4-7) was dominated from start to finish by No. 6 Johns Hopkins (3-8) in a 15-7 thrashing at Panzer Stadium on Saturday. Despite coming in as the favorites, Penn State didn’t stand much of a chance from the end of the first quarter on.
Mac O’Keefe and TJ Malone were the only Nittany Lions that did anything offensively, as they both put up three points. Aleric Fyock started in goal, making five saves while allowing 11 goals, before being replaced by Colby Kneese, who made one save on five shots.
For Hopkins, Connor DeSimone had six points and Cole Williams had four goals. Tim Marcille was great in the cage for the Blue Jays, making 12 saves on 18 shots.

After going 1-4 during the first phase of the season, Penn State bounced back and went 3-2 to end the year. The two most recent games have been a 14-13 overtime win versus Michigan at home on Senior Day and a 10-9 upset victory over then-No. 15 Ohio State on the road.
The Nittany Lions are entering the Big Ten Tournament on a winning streak, and their first matchup will be against the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays. That game is set to take place at Panzer Stadium on Saturday at 6 p.m.
