Starting at 3 p.m. Wednesday, visits to all state incarceration facilities will be suspended until further notice. That is the word from the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision via its website this week.
Since the middle of December, coronavirus cases for those incarcerated have increased. At the Lakeview Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility in Brocton and the Gowanda Correctional Facility, through the most recent data available from Dec. 24, there are 20 and 30 known positive cases, respectively, with an increasing number of pending test results not yet known. At Collins Correctional Facility, there are two known cases with 51 pending.

Closing the Gowanda Correctional Facility will have a devastating impact on the local economy, according to Gowanda Mayor David Smith.
The medium security prison in the Town of Collins is one of three state prisons New York State is shuttering as a cost saving move.
The two other state prisons being closed are the Watertown Correctional Facility and the Clinton Annex in Dannemora.
All three are expected to be closed by March 30, according to a letter from the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. To achieve the savings associated with the state s financial plan for this agency, the closure process must begin immediately, wrote Acting Commissioner Anthony Annucci.
