‘I wanted to get to the soul’: Dick Fontaine on his approach to documentary filmmaking

Leading British documentary film director Dick Fontaine celebrates his 82nd birthday in Durban next month, where he has lived for about a year.
Fontaine introduced “the techniques of direct cinema to British television”, according to the Dick Fontaine and Pat Hartley Collection at the Harvard Film Archive. Starting as cinéma verité “truth cinema” in France in the late 1950s, direct cinema revitalised documentary filmmaking in the United Kingdom.

Courtney Pine is back on the curriculum. Last week the exam board Pearson Edexcel reversed its decision to remove the jazz musician, its only Black composer, from the set works of its A-level music syllabus.
Pearson’s U-turn followed an outcry by many people who spoke out for diversity in our teaching. However, its initial decision revealed a persistent and much wider problem within education – namely that of Black figures and experiences being systematically omitted.
