When WC Finals are weather-threatened, cancellations carry a heavy weight
It’s often forgotten that prior to 2005, there were no World Cup Finals. Season titles were claimed at various times and venues when the last race of each discipline was held. Somewhere in there, the overall would be clinched, occasionally in the absence of the victor’s presence. Not very dramatic.
These days, thanks in large part to some enterprising Swiss from Lenzerheide, the World Cup Finals, as we know them today, bring all the contenders together, male and female, to create a collective finish line for the season. It’s got sporting drama … and some. This year, the titles that remain undecided include men’s overall, GS and super G. On the women’s side, the overall, slalom, and downhill remain in play.
Goggia, Feuz win WCup downhill titles after races canceled
By GRAHAM DUNBARMarch 17, 2021 GMT
Sofia Goggia and Beat Feuz clinched the downhill World Cup season titles on Wednesday without needing to put on their skis after the final races in the discipline were canceled because of heavy snow.
Goggia, who has not raced since breaking a bone in her right knee seven weeks ago, won the downhill crystal globe for a second time. It was the fourth straight title for Feuz.
The races in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, were canceled because of “continuing snowfall and the present weather situation,” organizers said.
The decision was bad news for Swiss skiers Lara Gut-Behrami and Marco Odermatt, who were hoping to make up ground in the race for the women’s and men’s overall World cup title.
Alpine skiing: Weather hands World Cup downhill titles to Feuz and Goggia
FIS Ski World Cup - Men s Downhill
(Reuters) – Switzerland’s Beat Feuz and Italy’s Sofia Goggia won the men’s and women’s Alpine skiing World Cup downhill titles respectively on Wednesday after the final races in Lenzerheide were cancelled due to bad weather.
Organisers had already been unable to hold the required training runs on Monday and Tuesday due to heavy snow and strong winds in the Swiss resort and the schedule has no reserve days.
“According to World Cup Rules, the races will not be rescheduled. Globes will be awarded today,” the governing FIS said.
