THIS time last year the small community of Bungawalbin was dealing with the devastating impacts of wild fires, but this morning they are bracing for floods.
It’s hard to believe looking out the window right now that in November 2019 Bungawalbin was tinder dry and burning.
Fast forward to 2020 and the rain is bucketing down and residents bracing for what lays ahead.
That’s what you can expect when your town is just 3m above sea level. NIGHTMARE SIGHT: Joanne Cameron captured this photograph at Bungawalbin, where the fire has jumped the river.
A minor flood waning has been issued for the Richmond River at Coraki, Bungawalbin and Woodburn.
The warning zone stretches for almost the entire state - from Mungindi near the Queensland border to Tumbarumba near the Victorian border.
Almost the entire coast will also be hit, with BOM issuing a separate warning for residents of the South Coast and parts of the northern rivers and the Snowy Mountains.
They re expected to be hit with heavy rain, but it looks like they will escape the thunderstorms.
Only the state s far west will be spared the drenching which has been causing havoc for days.
Heavy rainfall is still impacting parts of northern NSW, with major flooding now possible at Coutts Crossing on Wed evening. With further rain forecast, additional rises in the area are possible. Subscriber only AFTER severe weather has pounded the Northern Rives, this morning the State Emergency Service made a welcome announcement. SES Lismore City Deputy Commander Sue Brown, said the good news was that the community appeared to be heeding their advice to not drive through floodwater. We had no flood rescues on Tuesday, which was excellent, she said. We did transport a family across some flood water, but it was not a rescue, they had made very positive choices not to drive into floodwater. Ms Brown said the community should be congratulated for showing good judgment. I want to thank the community for using their common sense during this weather event, she said.
The SES has issued an evacuation order for the Tweed River at Condong, Tumbulgum and surrounding areas The Wilsons River at Lismore is expected to exceed the moderate flood level (7.20m) around 6pm Tuesday. The river level may peak near 8.20m around 2am Wednesday, with moderate flooding.
