Como Zoo in St. Paul has brought animals and families together free of charge.
Como Zoo s history dates back to 1897. After St. Paul received a donation of three deer, the city provided a fenced-in pasture, and Como Zoo was born.
During the Great Depression, the Works Progress Administration built several structures at the zoo.
KSTP The WPA built our old zoo building that s right beside us here in the 1930s and that became kind of the keystone animal building, Terri Scheunemann with Como Zoo said.

ST PAUL, Minn. Como Park Zoo & Conservatory plans to hold a grand opening for its newest exhibit a redesigned home for the seals and sea lions in June.
The zoo will officially open Como Harbor with a 10 a.m. ribbon cutting June 3. The new exhibit features a large salt-water pool for the zoo s gray seals, harbor seals and sea lions including one of its most famous animals, Sparky.

Jim Klobuchar, an intrepid son of the Iron Range who with grace and puckish wit chronicled the lives of ordinary and fabled Minnesotans as a longtime columnist for the Star Tribune, died Wednesday at the Emerald Crest care facility in Burnsville. He was 93.
From 1961, when he left the Associated Press to work for the Minneapolis Tribune, until his retirement in 1995, Klobuchar trained an amused and perceptive eye every week on the state s culture, sports and politics. His energetic exploits both in and out of the newsroom made his name a household word in Minnesota long before he became known as the father of the state s senior U.S. senator.

Two Dall s sheep were born at the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory in April.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (FOX 9) - Two of the newest additions to the Como Zoo now each have their own weather-inspired names.
Iao and Breezy are two female Dall s sheep that were born in April at the zoo in St. Paul. A Como Zoo donor named Iao, which means cloud supreme in Hawaiian. Zookeepers that look over the hoofed animals at the facility came up with the name Breezy. Both babies are healthy, eating well, and are very, very adorable, said zookeeper Jill Erzar in a press release.
