The 6-foot-9 John averaged 8 points, 5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks this past season. His 191 career blocks rank second in Marquette history. He has made 91 starts over the last three seasons.
John’s departure is another piece of the overhaul of Marquette’s roster under new coach Shaka Smart. Marquette hired Smart from Texas to replace Steve Wojciechowski, who was fired after the Golden Eagles went 13-14 this past season.
Other transfers from Marquette’s 2020-21 team include Jamal Cain (Oakland), Koby McEwen (Weber State) and Symir Torrence (Syracuse). Dawson Garcia, who led Marquette in scoring (13.0) and rebounding (6.6) as a freshman this past season, has entered his name into NBA draft consideration but hasn’t ruled out a return to school.
OGDEN J.J. Overton will trade in Wolverine green for Wildcat purple for his final season of college basketball.
The 6-foot-6, 190-pound senior from San Diego will graduate and transfer to Weber State for his final season of eligibility, a source confirmed to KSL.com. Overton s transfer was first reported by CBS Jon Rothstein.
Overton, who played two seasons at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California, tied for the lead in scoring (with teammate Trey Woodbury) for Utah Valley in 2020-21 when he averaged 15.6 points on 50.7% shooting. The senior whose father, Chuck, played two seasons at Salt Lake Community College also averaged 4.2 rebounds per game trailing only standout posts Evan Cole (6.4 rpg) and Fardaws Aimaq (15.0 rpg), the standout center who recently declared for the NBA draft but did not sign an agent so as to keep his collegiate eligibility.

The Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team (10-12, 8-9 Big East) defeated the Marquette Golden Eagles (13-14, 8-12 Big East) 68-49 to stay alive in the Big East Tournament. This was Head Coach Patrick Ewing’s first win as a head coach at the conference tournament. The Hoyas’ next opponent will be the #14 Villanova Wildcats tomorrow at Madison Square Garden.
The Hoyas were led by senior guard Jahvon Blair, who came off the bench to score 20 points, while sophomore center Qudus Wahab had 19 points and 7 rebounds. Sophomore guard DJ Carton had 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists to pace Marquette.
