Tierra Williams moved to State College three years ago with her son and has actively engaged herself in the community since. Now, she is a candidate running for Ferguson Township Supervisor.
Williams has 1,598 votes in the primary election as of May 24 and is running against Lisa Strickland, who currently has 1,650 votes. The primary results will not be finalized until early June, and the general election will be Nov. 2.
Williams ran for the position during the primary elections as part of the joint slate, âOur Communities Canât Wait.â The campaign includes Penn State student and formerly incarcerated activist Divine Lipscomb, artistic director for FUSE Productions Richard Biever, and Penn State clinical law professor Gopal Balachandran â all of whom ran for State College Borough Council.
Centre County announced its unofficial primary election results prior to certification for the mayoral, borough council and school board positions in State College as of Thursday morning.
Democratic mayoral candidate Ezra Nanes claimed victory Wednesday night over his opponent, Democrat Jim Leous, who conceded the race to Nanes that evening.
Nanes said in a statement he was âdeeply honoredâ to have won the support of State College community members and thanked Leous, saying he âserved [the] community honorably.â Nanes said he looks forward to working with the members of borough council on various initiatives.
With no current Republican opponent for the general election race in November, Nanes will likely succeed current interim mayor Ron Filippelli, a candidate for borough council.
Three progressive, first-time candidates are the apparent winners of the Democratic nominations for State College Borough Council, making them the front-runners for the three seats up for election in November.
Gopal Balachandran (1,663 votes), Divine Lipscomb (1,434) and Richard Biever (1,191) were the top vote-getters among the field of six candidates in Tuesday’s primary election, according to unofficial totals as of Thursday morning.
The trio, who ran together on the Central PA United slate, outpaced current Councilwoman Katherine Yeaple (1,123), current Mayor Ronald Filippelli (933) and former Councilwoman Catherine Dauler (843).
Of the approximately 500 mail ballots still to be adjudicated countywide as of Thursday morning, about 55 are from State College voters, Centre County Board of Commissioners Chair Michael Pipe said. Five military and overseas absentee ballots and fewer than 100 provisional votes countywide also are still left to be counted.
