Investigation underway after two injured in Fort Smith shooting

An investigation is underway, and detectives are interviewing several witnesses at this time. Author: Nayely Palafox Updated: 10:45 AM CDT April 16, 2021 FORT SMITH, Ark. Fort Smith Police responded to a shooting at an apartment complex in the 4600 block of South P Street last night (April 10) at around 10 p.m. When police arrived, a 21-year-old male was found with a single gunshot wound and was taken to a local hospital for surgery. While en route, police were notified of another gunshot victim who was dropped off at local hospital emergency room by a private vehicle. The victim was an 18-year-old male and sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Police say both victims remain in serious condition.

The Fort Smith Police Department s (FSPD) Crisis Intervention Unit (CIU) has been awarded a Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Program grant to help serve those in Fort Smith who suffer from addiction and mental health crises. Launched in March 2020, CIU is one of the first of its kind in Arkansas. FSPD responded to 547 suicide-related calls and 236 calls involving overdoses just last year.

Thieves are still on the lookout for those catalytic converters in vehicles across Arkansas. One theft was caught on video, showing how quickly these thieves were. At around noon on Good Friday, a thief stole Daniel Smiths’ son’s catalytic converter outside of Central Mall in Fort Smith. “He called me and said ‘Dad, there’s something wrong with my car…it’s really loud,’’ Smith said. “I told him to look under it and he said there were pieces of metal under it. And so, I told him that someone had probably cut off his catalytic converter.”

Fort Smith s first female police officer laid to rest

Carol Hodges, 73, of Van Buren, passed away on Sunday (March 7). She was born Nov. 2, 1947, in Safford, Arizona. In 1975, Hodges became the first female officer for the Fort Smith Police Department. Following her career in law enforcement, Hodges worked in real estate in the ’80s and ’90s and retired as a Social Worker who helped abused children, teens and women, according to her obituary. Her friends and family gathered Wednesday to lay her to rest at the Oak Cemetery in Fort Smith.
