FORT SMITH, Arkansas Fort Smith Public Schools (FSPS) English teacher and drill team coach had her proposed termination reversed following a public hearing in front of the FSPS Board of Education Wednesday (May 12), but she will no longer be allowed to attend on-campus or off-campus activities in the district.

The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith on Saturday completed a series of socially distanced commencement ceremonies to honor the 2021 graduates following last week s event for the class of 2020.
Due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, in-person commencement ceremonies were not held in December for the class of 2020. While close to 200 students walked the stage on May 1, there were 810 graduates in the class of 2020 who earned bachelor s degrees; 247 who earned associate degrees; 119 who earned technical certificates; and 12 who earned master s degrees.
The 2021 candidates who walked May 7-9 included those graduating in the spring and summer 2021 semesters and comprised 542 bachelor s degree candidates; 172 associate degree candidates; 75 technical certificate candidates; and eight master s degree candidates, including the five students who are the first to graduate from the university s Master of Education program.
Fort Smith School Board to keep mask mandate in place through school year

FORT SMITH, Ark. The Fort Smith Public Schools Board of Education agreed at its regular board meeting Monday (April 26) to keep the district’s mask mandate in place until the end of the school district.
During the citizen’s participation segment of the meeting, Lacy McCain, mother of two school-age children who attend FSPS, appealed to the school board to drop the mask mandate considering Gov. Asa Hutchinson lifted the mask mandate at the end of March. McCain said children should be allowed to return to normal in classrooms for their health and mental well-being.
