Coeur d’Alene is a quintessential lake town located not far from the Washington-Idaho border. It is easily accessed via Interstate 90, or you can fly into Spokane, Washington. The area is beautifully picturesque with Lake Coeur D’Alene dominating the scenery. The downtown area is very walkable with cute shops and quaint sidewalk cafes. The city has lovely parks nestled alongside the lake. There are plenty of options for day trips with numerous small towns less than a one-hour drive from Coeur D’Alene.
Pro Tip: There is plenty of public parking in Coeur D’Alene, but parking enforcement is very strict. Make sure when you park you promptly pay the parking fees.

Panama: A Haven for Nature Lovers
Everyone knows the canal, but Panama, the diminutive land-bridge of a country, doesn’t seem to get the attention it’s due. Did you know Panama stretches east-west, and that the northern entrance to the canal from the Atlantic is actually farther west than where it meets the Pacific to the south? I lived there for a year, teaching English at a couple of universities, and found a boatload of natural sites to frequent, and the short driving distances meant I could see more in less time. Tourism there has come a long way since my time there the secret is out of the bag but that has only made travel there all the easier. Here are just a few of my personal favorite destinations and activities.
Born: March 15, 1917; Died: February 21, 1944
Little is known about Charles Wesley Powellâs connections to Griffin other than he is listed on our World War II Monument in Veterans Memorial Park.
What we do know is he was born March 15, 1917, the son of Charles Wesley Powell and Frances Lula Powell. Subsequently he lived in and around Clay County, Alabama, with his grandmother Mattie A. Powell. The family were farmers.
Powell completed the eighth grade before enlisting in the U.S. Army Oct. 16, 1940, at Fort McPherson, Georgia. He achieved the rank of Tech 5 Specialist while in the Army.
The 1940 Census confirms at that time he was single and stationed at Fort Sherman in the Panama Canal Zone. He died there at Gorgas Hospital from unknown causes on Feb. 21, 1944.
