Joe Schilling could still avoid jail time after knocking out an intoxicated bar patron in Florida earlier this year, but he may have to pay the victim a large amount of money after Justin Balboa sued him for $30,000.
It all started when footage showing Schilling knocking out a belligerent bar patron went viral on social media after Schilling accused Balboa of making racist comments and derogatory remarks towards Schilling’s romantic partner. Balboa is now seeking damages for battery and also plans on suing the Florida bar, B-Square Burgers in Fort Lauderdale (under Bro Management Las Olas LLC), for negligence.

Bellator fighter Joe Schilling is facing a possible misdemeanor charge for battery after allegedly punching another man in a bar. MMA Fighting reports that 31 year-old Justin Balboa has made contact with police over the incident in which he alleged Schilling “hit him for no reason.”
Video of the incident was posted online, in which Balboa backed up and bumped into Schilling who moved past him. Balboa appears to get Schilling’s attention, and the fighter turned around to face him. Moments later, Schilling knocked Balboa down and apparently out.
According to the report, Balboa told police that he “only wanted the incident documented in order to file a civil suit against the establishment.” Police noted that he was clearly intoxicated while in contact with them and a manager for the establishment said that Balboa “was extremely intoxicated and had possibly made an improper remark about the girlfriend/wife of the male who had struck him, which caused the fight to escal

Balboa had a bloody lip and described Schilling as a 6-foot-5, 270-pound white male who “just hit him for no reason.” Balboa “would not elaborate on how or why the male punched him,” according to the police report, but was “obviously intoxicated.” That same night Balboa told officers that he “only wanted the incident documented in order to file a civil suit against the establishment.”

Former Bellator middleweight contender Joe Schilling is facing legal issues in the aftermath of his now-viral altercation with a man at a Florida bar over the weekend.
Footage surfaced yesterday of Schilling throwing a flurry of punches at a bar patron on Sunday night in Fort Lauderdale, whose identity was later revealed as Justin Balboa. In the video, Schilling appears to move politely past Balboa on his way back from the other side of the bar, but then he and Balboa exchange words and get in each other’s faces which resulted in Schilling knocking out Balboa in the process.
