Sen Ernst s New Bill Targets Groups Violating Federal Law, Like NIH Grantee EcoHealth Alliance

Share Source: AP Photo/Ng Han Guan On Tuesday, Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) introduced the Stop the Outlay of Payments (STOP) Act, a bill that will deny taxpayer funding from organizations not properly transparent about their projects. The legislation will effectively serve to provide accountability and enforcement, to protect taxpayers from groups like the EcoHealth Alliance, an NIH grant recipient which has not been forthcoming about what it does with funds. Under the STOP Act, grant recipients have 120 days to come into compliance after being suspended and can continue to receive support from other grants if an agreement has been made to resolve the suspension of the grant, explains a press release from Sen. Ernst s office.

Defense of Georgia voting law ignores key facts | Letters Updated 3:41 PM; Essington noted that the Washington Post gave President Joe Biden “Four Pinocchios” for his claim the Georgia law “ends voting hours early.” While the president was incorrect on this particular claim, the abundance of overall evidence suggests that the Georgia law suppresses voting. This added cost is unnecessary and discriminatory. Voter ID laws absolutely lower turnout among poor people and, disproportionately, people of color, as confirmed by a 2014 study by the Government Accountability Office. The law also limits the time for requesting an absentee ballot and makes drop boxes for filled-out “mail-in” ballots less accessible.

US Nonprofit With Ties to Wuhan Lab Violated Federal Law by Failing to Disclose Taxpayer Funding, Complaint Alleges

US Nonprofit With Ties to Wuhan Lab Violated Federal Law by Failing to Disclose Taxpayer Funding, Complaint Alleges A U.S. nonprofit with close ties to the Wuhan Institute of Virology violated federal law by failing to disclose that taxpayer funds supported its work, according to a complaint a taxpayer watchdog group filed on Monday. EcoHealth Alliance (EHA) diverted $600,000 in taxpayer funds to the WIV in the form of National Institutes of Health subgrants between 2014 and 2019 as part of a research project studying coronaviruses from Chinese bats. But press releases from EHA describing the project failed to disclose that the project was backed by federal dollars, an omission that, according to the White Coat Waste Project, is a violation of a federal law known as the Stevens Amendment.
