Charles Grodin, the droll, offbeat actor and writer who scored as a caddish newlywed in The Heartbreak Kid and later had roles ranging from Robert De Niro s counterpart in the comic thriller Midnight Run to the bedeviled father in the Beethoven comedies, has died. He was 86.

TRIBUTES ARE BEING paid to Charles Grodin, the offbeat actor and writer who starred as a newlywed cad in The Heartbreak Kid and the father in the Beethoven comedies, who has died at the age of 86.
Grodin’s son Nicholas said his father died yesterday at his home in Wilton, Connecticut, from bone marrow cancer.
Tributes have been paid from across the Hollywood sphere, with comedians and actors like Steve Martin, Ben Stiller, Bradley Whitford and even Miss Piggy singing his praises.
