A free “Eat United” Summer Food Service program will take place once again this summer in Crookston, and with the COVID-19 pandemic still lingering, as was the case in 2020 it will be conducted in “grab and go” fashion to prevent large numbers of people from congregating in close quarters.
Free meals will be provided to everyone from age 0-18 on a first-come, first-serve basis and will be distributed from the main entrance of Highland School.
The initiative is being made possible by the USDA, Crookston Public Schools and United Way of Crookston.

The North Dakota Department of Public Instruction is seeking applications from organizations that are interested in operating North Dakota’s Summer Food Service Program. The program provides meals to children when school is not in session.
Potential sponsors include residential summer camps, private nonprofit organizations, public schools, nonprofit private schools, and local, municipal, county, tribal or state government units.
Any potential meal provider is eligible to participate, although they must complete the application process to be approved. Normally, eligibility rules would require that at least 50% of the children who are served meals, or who are living in the area, to be eligible for free or reduced-price meals based on local school or census data. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has waived that requirement because of COVID-19.
Summer Food Service Program Extended for Students
Having enough to eat for many Sioux Falls families is a daily struggle and in this COVID-19 era, it has taken a toll on several households. If you have children 18 and under you will be happy to know that your kids will once again get free meals during the summer school break.
The program that began in 2020 by the Trump administration will continue as the U.S. Department of Agriculture has extended the Summer Food Service Program. The extension runs through September 30 and will allow families some relief during the ongoing pandemic.
Dakota News Now reports that the Sioux Falls School District already has the program in place. Sioux Falls School District Child Nutrition Director Gay Anderson says, “I think it will just help families, again who have struggled through some of this being able to you know ‘we have a little bit of reprieve, we’ll be able to have the free meals and take care of it that way.
