Active COVID-19 infections dropped to their lowest level in nearly a month, the South Dakota Department of Health reported Friday, while three additional people died with COVID-19.
The three deaths occurred in two people 80 or older and one person 70-79. Two were women and one was a man. All three were residents of a long-term care facility. The number of people in South Dakota who have died with COVID-19 is 1,952.
The state reported 243 new infections, bringing the total to 120,856 people who have tested positive for coronavirus. But a significant number of those - 98 - were historic cases that were only just reported by a laboratory, and some of those cases dated to as far back as November. The historic cases showed that Codington County had 104 new cases Friday.
The South Dakota Department of Health reported 234 new COVID-19 infections on Thursday and one new death.
The latest death was in a man in the 20-29 age group. It was the eighth death in that age group and the 1,949th reported fatality of a person in South Dakota with COVID-19.
Eighty-nine new infections were reported among Minnehaha County residents. Lincoln County residents had 18, Codington County 23 and Brown County four. Six new cases were reported in residents of a long-term care facility.
Hospitalized COVID-19 patients fell to 109. Twenty of those were receiving intensive care and nine were on ventilators.
Active infections fell to 2,328.

Active South Dakota COVID-19 cases increase with 295 new infections
The new infections drove the number of active cases in the state to 2,511.
Minnehaha County residents accounted for 107 new infections, while Lincoln County saw 33 new cases. Brown County reported 13 new cases while Codington County had 11.
There were no new deaths reported Wednesday, leaving the total pandemic death count in the state at 1,938.
Hospitalizations fell to 94. Of those, 17 were receiving intensive care and nine were on ventilators.
Vaccines increased to 460,688. Those doses were given 280,942 people.
