The Latest: Louisiana lifts mask requirement for students

BATON ROUGE, La. Gov. John Bel Edwards is scrapping nearly every remaining coronavirus restriction in Louisiana and lifting the statewide requirement that students must wear a mask in the classroom and at school events.
The Democratic governor announced Tuesday that he ll keep the statewide public health emergency declaration in place. But Louisiana will have almost none of the rules governing businesses and behavior over the last 15 months of the pandemic.
Edwards cited the wide availability of the coronavirus vaccine in Louisiana.
Kemp gives $5M to Georgia troopers for effort against street racing

ATLANTA - Gov. Brian Kemp is giving the Georgia Department of Public Safety $5 million to fight street racing and other crime in the Atlanta area.
The Republican governor said Monday the money will come from the emergency fund he controls.
Kemp spokesperson Cody Hall said it could pay for overtime and other expenses incurred by state troopers and other state agencies through the end of the current budget year on June 30. Before any could be shared with local agencies, they would have to reach written agreements with the state, Hall said.

White House COVID Adviser Andy Slavitt Calls on WHO to Assist With Virus Origin Investigation

White House COVID-19 adviser Andy Slavitt called for full assistance from the World Health Organization (WHO) in an investigation into the origins of the coronavirus and said we don t have that now.
Slavitt spoke during Tuesday s COVID-19 task force briefing and said help from the WHO is needed alongside China, and that they both need to increase their efforts to provide answers to the world. His comments came as the White House announced that 50% of fully vaccinated U.S. adults will be reached on Tuesday.
