No takers for 20% of the offer
The average price at Sale 19 of the auction of Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) rose to a 12-week high level of ₹125.87 a kg – up from previous week’s ₹121.53.
However, as various States imposed stringent Covid-19 restrictions, the demand was generally weak resulting in withdrawals across the different lots.
In all, teas worth ₹5.78 crore remained unsold as there were no takers for some 20 per cent of the offer.
“The green tea of Pascoes Woodlands topped the entire auctions when Komal Enterprises bought it for ₹301 a kg,” Ravichandran Broos, General Manager of Paramount Tea Marketing, who auctioned this tea, told

Collector exempts tea auctions from ongoing lockdown The weekly Dust tea auctions of Coonoor Tea Trade Association which are normally held on Fridays will be held on Saturday this week because the market was closed on Friday for Ramalan / Ramadan festival.
In all, 7.08 lakh kg Dust grade will be offered for this Sale No: 19. Of this, 6.53 lakh kg belongs to CTC variety and 55,000 kg, orthodox variety.
Together with the leaf grades, a total of 22.89 lakh kg is being offered for this sale which will conclude on Saturday.
It is the second highest volume so far this calendar – just 43,000 kg less than the year’s highest volume of 23.32 lakh kg offered a fortnight ago.

Nine inmates imprisoned at the Coonoor sub-jail in the Nilgiris have tested positive for COVID-19, police and Health Department officials confirmed on Tuesday.
Sources said the nine persons were in jail on charges of possession of marijuana, sexual abuse against minors and other offences. One of the inmates who tested positive was also an accused in the Kodanad dacoity-cum-murder case, and he has since been taken to Coimbatore for treatment, officials said.

Although the offer of 23.32 lakh kg for Sale 17 of the auction of Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) was the highest for any auction so far this calendar, increased demand helped as much as 19.84 lakh kg of this offer (87 per cent) to be sold despite the average price rising to ₹ 117.48 a kg from previous week’s ₹114.53.
This resulted in the overall earnings to rise to ₹23.31 crore from ₹15.78 crore, marking a growth of ₹7.53 crore or 47.72 per cent in just one week.
