And he’s looking for actors to bring his vision to the screen. “We re doing a short film that we’re going to be filming here in Stockton,” says Leake, 27, the first spoken-word poet to ever be featured on the popular TV talent competition. “Stockton (has a) long, long history of filmmaking here in town. … I’m hoping to be a part of the resurgence of bringing film and the film industry back here and into the forefront. So, yeah, I m excited for that.” Leake, who has taken his past as “a young kid from Southside Stockton” and woven it into compelling and poignant storytelling, plans to film in late May or late June. He’s putting out a call for actors, “anybody with acting experience who would like to be able to see about getting their shot to be in a short film that will hopefully win an Oscar or something like that.”

African American History Focus Of MJC Conference Modesto Junior College’s African American Education Conference will be presented virtually on Saturday, Feb. 27 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. All are welcome to join MJC to celebrate African American history, culture, and education. This year’s theme is Perseverance in the Face of Adversity. Attendees will hear inspiring presentations on how to succeed in higher education, explore effective health care and wellness strategies while navigating the global pandemic, and discuss supportive resources for academic achievement. These connections can be between individual musicians, different playing styles or even genres, as long as they are joined together in expressions through improvisation. Brothers Nicki and Patrick Adams have a natural bond that most musicians can never approximate with their peers. Their common upbringing and interests have also given them the idea to blend the aural tradition of jazz with the more written one of classical, with a unique approach that makes their efforts seem buoyant and natural on their new recording, Lynx. Originally from Prescott, Arizona, the Adams brothers both began playing piano early on at the behest of their parents. In middle school, the two entered the band program, and Patrick took up the trumpet. During high school, they discovered jazz under the guidance of master ceramicist/educator Heath Kreiger.
