All eyes are on Cogeco Inc. following a decision issued last week by Canada’s telecommunications regulator meant to encourage more competition in the wireless market.
In the long-awaited ruling, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission stated it will mandate that the country’s large wireless incumbents Rogers Communications Inc., BCE Inc. and Telus Corp. plus the smaller SaskTel, give regional providers that invest in spectrum and infrastructure wholesale access to their networks for seven years.

Canada’s telecommunications regulator issued a landmark decision Thursday aimed at spurring competition in the wireless market, but some industry watchers say the changes will leave incumbents largely unaffected.
In a long-awaited ruling, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission stated it will mandate Canada’s Big Three wireless companies, plus SaskTel, to give regional wireless providers that invest in spectrum and infrastructure wholesale access to their networks for seven years.

Canada’s telecom regulator’s decision to make it easier for small wireless carriers to expand to different regions of the country won’t result in an immediate shift for Canadian consumers, but will bring about “incremental” improvements to wireless competition, according to CRTC chairman Ian Scott.
“It’s a longer-term game. And there isn’t an instant reward,” Scott said in an interview Thursday following the release of the CRTC’s long-awaited decision on mandating access to large national wireless providers’ networks.
