Port City Bill: Two inquiries into voting process

Share: COLOMBO (News 1st): A decision has been reached to conduct two special inquiries into the allegations that votes were not counted properly during the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill vote in Parliament, on the instructions of Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena. Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) requested that an inquiry be conducted with regard to the Port City Bill vote in Parliament, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena told News 1st on Saturday (May 22). Accordingly, one inquiry will look into whether the vote was not properly calculated due to a technical error; the assistance of experts from the Ministry of Technology will be sought for this purpose, the Speaker noted.

Port City crucial to attract foreign investments: Minister

Share: COLOMBO (News 1st): There is a crucial requirement to attract foreign investment into Sri Lanka, without further intensifying the debt burden, Minister of Education Prof. G. L. Peiris said on Friday (May 21). “The creation of suitable procedures and institutions to achieve this target is a timely need. This is why our government decided to table the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill in parliament and get it passed,” the Minister elaborated. Whilst emphasizing that as per Article 148 of the Constitution, the Parliament holds sole authority over the administration of public funds, Minister Prof. Peiris pointed out that this authority has NOT been undermined by the Port City Bill under no circumstances.
