Buckingham Group has won a £55m job to upgrade the Tyne and Wear metro.
The contractor has been officially appointed to dual and add electrification to three sections of the line between Pelaw and Bede stations, which will allow passenger trains to run alongside freight trains. The upgrade will see the capacity of the line increase by 24,000 extra passengers per day.
Buckingham Group rail contracts director Rob Harwood said: “Having recently completed the construction of the Howdon depot for Nexus in 2020, we are now able to continue working with Nexus and involving the supply chain in the region on this exciting project.
