In Memoriam: Dusty Hill 1949-2021 The ZZ Top bassist was 72 and, until a few days before his death, still touring Dusty Hill of ZZ Top, who provided the bass line for the band that’s had legs for more than half a century, has died at the age of 72, just days after he’d taken a leave of absence. “We are saddened by the news today that our compadre, Dusty Hill, has passed away in his sleep at home in Houston,” wrote lead vocalist Billy Gibbons and drummer Frank Beard in a joint statement Wednesday. “We, along with legions of ZZ Top fans around the world, will miss your steadfast presence, your good nature, and enduring commitment to providing that monumental bottom to the ‘Top.’ We will forever be connected to that ‘Blues Shuffle in C.’ You will be missed greatly, amigo.”
