The Goleta Union School District returned to in-person instruction in March on a five-day modified schedule. Now that Santa Barbara County has moved to the orange tier of Californiaâs reopening guidelines, the district plans to have all students fully return in-person in August for the 2021-22 school year.
The school district reopened after Santa Barbara Countyâs COVID-19 case rate remained below 25 cases per 100,000 residents for five consecutive days. Upon opening, the district required all nine of their school sites to adhere to a strict 19:1 student to teacher ratio to accommodate for the six-feet social distancing protocol.

In the May 11 Noozhawk article, “Santa Barbara Ordinance Committee Supports 15% Inclusionary Housing Requirement,” we read about a new proposal to increase Santa Barbara’s mandatory low-income housing inclusionary rules for new residential properties that was reimposed two years ago.
Once again, we see our elected officials making rules, without understanding the costs of developing property in the city (with all of the myriad regulatory requirements, both state and local), thinking that will magically result in more “affordable” housing being produced.
Perhaps they should look back to see that, when these types of restrictions were in place years ago, NO rental housing was produced for about 40 years.

She said Goleta Union has 10 school psychologists, one for every school site, and that all of them are fully credentialed and well-trained. She said most of them have additional training and certifications, and all of them are entirely capable of providing services to any student. Mental health professionals are trained to transition services between clinicians while maintaining a continuity of care, Lew said. GUSD has a unique commitment to the socio-emotional learning and mental well-being of our students.
She said Santa Barbara County has an average ratio of one school psychologist per 1,013 students, but in Goleta it s one school psyschologist per 330 students.
