We can officially say it. Lacrosse is back, Y’all!
It was a much slower first weekend of action than usual with only two games on the docket, but college lacrosse officially returned on Saturday. Bellarmine took down Mercer on in the first game of the season and just a few hours later we saw Denver best Utah.
Denver 9, Utah 8
The Denver Pioneers overcame missing 12 players, including Schuyler Blair, Alex Simmons, and Colin Squires, struggling heavily on the power play (1-for-8), and going 8-for-20 at the faceoff dot, to get hot in the second half and put away the visiting Utah Utes, 9-8, in their home opener.
Morrill was one of the most notable offseason pickups in the sport, and for good cause. Never flashy but always productive, he was an exceptional avatar for Yale’s program as it emerged to win its first national title in 2018 and came within a victory of repeating the following year.
He’ll slide into an attack spot along with Walker, and Cotler should contend for a substantial role as well. Their familiarity figures to help acclimate both to the Mile High City, though the fall was spent figuring out how they would fit in Denver’s scheme.
“There’s no ego when you talk about Jackson Morrill or Lucas Cotler,” Tierney said. “It’s kind of the mantra of our team, anyway Danny Logan, Ethan Walker, all the returning captains. All Lucas and Jackson wanted to do was be on a good team, a team that cared and having coaches concerned about their health and safety and education. So far, so good.”

IL s first rankings of the season reflect an offseason of change. Typically, IL produces its first rankings in the fall, but due to the unique nature of this offseason deferred to now to account for as much player movement and news about the forthcoming season as possible.
Still, a lot could change between now and mid-February. So, should any significant changes happen from now until the season fully starts for example, if there s more clarity around Ivy League teams paricipation his spring IL will consider an updated preseason ranking before starting the in-season Media Poll in mid-February. Then, rankings will be every Monday during the 2021 college lacrosse season.
