Columbia school board member resigns; replacement sought

Following what was likely mid-Missouri s last snow fall for awhile, Columbia residents are urging MoDOT to deal with the city s potholes. MoDOT said it s received a number of complaints, especially regarding Stadium Boulevard and Providence Road. The department said Stadium Boulevard is currently under contract for repairs. It is most definitely on the last leg,  Kirsten Munck, MoDOT area engineer, said. The Missouri House perfected an amendment to a bill that bans transgender athletes from joining female teams on Wednesday, but trans athletes in Missouri already face obstacles as it is. The current Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) policy bans trans females from competing in girls’ sports unless they have completed at least one year of hormone therapy.

$6 million bond issue would help the Boone County Fire District with new land, vehicles

COLUMBIA- With municipal elections set for Tuesday, City Council and Columbia School Board are not the only items on the ballot in Boone County.  Voters will have a chance to vote yes or no on a $6 million bond issue that would go to Boone County Fire Protection. The bond would not add to any taxes, but would be an extension of the 2014 bond that added a 25 cent of out $100 on real property and personal property taxes.  Assistant Chief Boone County Fire District Gale Blomenkamp talked about how this is the first in a series of bonds that the fire department will put on the ballot.

In Columbia, voters in the Second and Sixth wards were casting ballots for City Council seats. In the Second Ward, Bill Weitkemper, Jim Meyer and Andrea Waner are competing to replace Mike Trapp, who chose not to seek election to a fourth three-year term. In the Sixth Ward, incumbent Betsy Peters is seeking a third term and faces challenges from Randy Minchew and Philip Merriman. There are five people seeking one of two three-year terms on the Columbia School Board. They are incumbent Teresa Maledy and newcomers Luke Neal, Aron Saylor, Katherine Sasser and Jeanne Snodgrass. A special election to replace Kip Kendrick as 45th District state representative is also on the ballot. The candidates are Democrat David Tyson Smith and Libertarian Glenn Nielsen.
