5 Charming Small Towns To Visit Along The Oregon Coast
Feb.7.2021
I love the Oregon Coast and the drive along Highway 101. The beaches vary between long stretches of packed sand you can drive on to epic, rocky cliffs with crashing waves. You will also see plenty of sea stacks, which are large stacks of rocks that were once part of the coastline. The most iconic is Haystack Rock, located on Cannon Beach. As you work your way south along Highway 101, you wonât find crowded, large, resort beach towns. Instead, you will pass through charming small towns that make this such a unique beach experience. The five towns I have profiled all have a special place in my heart, whether it is for a small local business or a geological feature that stands out.

VANCOUVER, Wash. In its fourth year, the Columbia River Maritime Museum’s mini boat program is full-sail ahead.
“It’s a global multidisciplinary education program for fifth through seventh-grade students, and the United States and Japan,” said Nate Sandel, the museum’s director of education.
Students design, build and launch the boats with the goal of sending them across the Pacific Ocean to a partner school in Japan. So far a total of 27 mini boats have been launched through the program.

(Seaside, Oregon) – Since a handful of Oregon coast counties have been upgraded from extreme risk to high risk, some reopenings around the region will happen. For lovers of aquariums, only one facility opens back up, however, but another famed history museum in Astoria swings open its doors.
Meanwhile, Cannon Beach s Friends of Haystack Rock s lecture series returns with this season going all digital.
New COVID risk assessments by the State of Oregon have relaxed restrictions in six counties, including some on the Oregon coast. Clatsop, Coos, Douglas and Lincoln counties have gone from the extreme risk category down to high risk, which opens up aspects of some businesses and attractions. However, only the Seaside Aquarium in Clatsop County is opening back up, unlocking its doors again on Friday.
miniboat, part of the
Columbia River Maritime Museum s miniboat program, has fetched up in an exotic location while on its way to Japan.
This one,
S/V Liberty, launched by students from
Wyâeast Middle School in Vancouver, Washington, in the spring, was off to an inauspicious start: It crash-landed. It was repaired and relaunched in July.
This time, after over 100 days at sea, the Liberty landed 4,500 miles away on Nov. 4 on the
Ailuk Atoll. Located in the Marshall Islands, the tiny atoll has a population of only 357.
Amazingly, even after crossing a reef before landing, the Liberty arrived with minimal damage. The islanders initially left it alone for a while, fearing COVID-19 exposure, but after studying the miniboat further, they found the note affixed to it explaining the little vessel s story, and how to contact the students.
While museums in Clatsop County are closed because of the countyâs move during the coronavirus pandemic to the extreme risk category, many local museums still hold a bevy of treasures on their websites.
Lewis and Clark National Historical Park (youtube.com/user/Lewisandclarknhp) has started posting âFridays with a Rangerâ videos since March, where park rangers teach different skills to viewers. Other videos on the channel feature guest speakers and scenes of the park.
The park plans to upload historical films and educational videos from the park that can be used for children.
The park also has cell phone audio tours that can be experienced by calling 503-207-2240. The tours are typically listened to at the park but can be listened to anywhere.
