Athens hires new fire chief Albert Hogan Jr. Posted: Jan 25, 2021 9:24 PM Posted By: Ashley Thusius Athens Fire and Rescue has a new chief. The Athens City Council voted on Monday to hire Albert Hogan Jr., who worked with DeKalb County Fire Rescue in Georgia for 23 years. “I’m ecstatic about this opportunity,” Hogan said. “Athens is the place that is the right fit, and it will be a nice change of pace. I look forward to meeting everyone.” He became fire captain of DeKalb County Fire Rescue in Georgia in 2006 and then battalion chief in 2016. He also served with the department’s Hazardous Materials Team, Hazardous Materials Decontamination Team and Accreditation Committee, among other committees. He has a bachelor’s degree in fire administration from Columbia Southern University.

Owens still serves post-retirement

Whether it was service throughout her more than 30-year career in the military or through her many community involvements, retired Lt. Col. Terry Owens always has emphasized care for others. A newly elected member of the Radcliff City Council, Owens has been active in several community organizations since moving to the Fort Knox area in 2007. Originally from Newport News, Virginia, Owens earned a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1987 and a master’s degree in elementary education in 1990 from Hampton University. Also in 1987, Owens joined the U.S. Army Reserves as a combat medic in the 18th Field Hospital in Norfolk, a decision that foreshadowed a long career in military leadership.
