Columbus pastors slam Ginther for playing politics with Black lives

Specifically, the trio want Ginther to do more to change what they describe as a culture of racism in the police division and to speak more with people like themselves, who they say have different points of view than he does. The mayor has no idea how traumatized African American males  including those of us who are pastors  how we are victims of post-traumatic stress disorder every time we come in contact, seeing a police car or seeing the (cruiser) lights, Kee said.  We re talking about how psychologically how messed up we are as Black men because we are on the edge.

Columbus police budget amendment approved; will halt officer hires

The Columbus City Council appeared poised to temporarily shut down the hiring of new city police officers until a new chief is hired and an audit of past hiring practices is completed. I believe we must take the time to get the next (police recruit) class right, Council President Shannon Hardin said Thursday during a virtual budget meeting. He introduced a budget amendment to divert $2.5 million slated to pay for the new 45-officer police class scheduled for this June into anti-violence programs, medical training for officers now required by city code to offer first aid to use-of-force victims, and youth workforce development.

Andre Hill shooting: Columbus police officer Coy s history, firing

A former Columbus police officer with a troubled past in the Police Division now faces a murder charge in the shooting death of a Black man. Adam Coy shot and killed 47-year-old Andre Hill within seconds of responding to the scene of a non-emergency disturbance call Dec. 22 on the Northwest Side. He was fired later that month, a decision that is now being contested. On Wednesday evening, his arrest and indictment was announced by Attorney General Dave Yost. In addition to the murder charge, Coy faces a count of felonious assault and two counts of dereliction of duty  one for failing to turn on his body camera when he responded to the scene, and another for failing to inform his fellow officer that he felt Hill presented a danger.

Downtown Columbus businesses and residents steel themselves for Sunday protest

Obviously, my concerns are for violence that may be happening with the open carry, Ungar said.  Reports said supporters of President Donald Trump are planning an armed march, and that state officials do not plan to ban guns from Statehouse grounds. I am afraid of the guns. I am afraid of confrontation. And I think that s what it is, she said.  I m scared right now, I wasn t scared with the Black Lives Matter (protests). Never scared. Thought it was very important. Didn’t like the looting. But that wasn t the point of the demonstration.   Law enforcement, property and business owners and residents are preparing for what might happen this weekend.
