But it s not a big enough boost to supply. Now you have 7 million people they are eligible for the vaccine but the vaccine is scarce, said Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
It s simple math. In New York, 7 million people are eligible now including health care workers, essential front linw workers and people over the age of 65.
Currently, New York State is only getting about 290,000 first doses a week. You re still talking about multiple weeks before you can cover the existing eligible population, Cuomo said.
Right now, if you get the first dose, you re guaranteed a second dose that is kept in reserve.
ROOSEVELT, Long Island (WABC) A majority of the deaths from COVID-19 have been in minority communities which is why health officials on Long Island are focusing their vaccination efforts in areas with higher minority populations.
On Wednesday, hundreds of people had appointments to get the coronavirus vaccine at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Roosevelt. These are hard-hit communities and high need communities, Northwell Health s Senior Vice President of Community and Population Health Dr. Debbie Salas-Lopez said. Black and brown people in this community were very eager to receive the vaccine, Memorial Presbyterian Church s Rev. Scott Williams said.
Getting the vaccine into minority communities has its challenges.

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) The Javits Center is no longer taking appointments as the state is starting week six of their vaccination process.
It opened early Sunday morning, but then around 8 a.m. the Javits Center announced they are not taking any more appointments until further notice, along with several other state-run sites.
Other sites that are no longer taking appointments include Jones Beach - Field 3, State Fair Expo Center, SUNY Albany, Westchester County Center, SUNY Stony Brook University Innovation and Discovery Center, Aqueduct Racetrack - Racing Hall, SUNY Binghampton, SUNY Polytechnic Institute, University at Buffalo South Campus and Rochester Dome Arena.
