Coronavirus cases in India hit a record daily high since the outbreak of the pandemic with 1,03,558 new infections pushing the nationwide COVID-19 tally to 1,25,89,067, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on April 5.
The single-day rise in cases surpassed the earlier peak of 97,894 infections reported on September 17, last year, making it the highest so far. The death toll increased to 1,65,101 with 478 daily new fatalities, the data updated at 8 a.m. showed.

The death toll climbed to 1,64,623 on April 4 with 513 new fatalities, the Ministry data updated at 8 a.m. showed India on April 4 recorded 93,249 new coronavirus infections, the highest single-day rise so far this year, which took the total COVID-19 cases to 1,24,85,509, according to Union Health Ministry data.
This is the biggest daily rise in cases since September 19, when 93,337 fresh infections were recorded.
Ten districts account for 50% of the total active caseload of the country.
In the last two months (February 3 to April 3), Maharashtra has shown a nine-fold jump, the maximum increase in the number of active cases during this period. In percentage terms, Punjab has reported the maximum rise, the release said.
India’s cumulative recoveries stand at 1,15,69,241, with an addition of 44,202 in the last 24 hours.
“Six States account for 85.85% of the new deaths, with Maharashtra seeing the maximum casualties (481), followed by Punjab with 57,” said the Ministry.
Vaccination figures
Giving the vaccination figures, the Ministry said that the cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed the 7.3 crore mark. As many as 7,30,54,295 vaccine doses have been administered through 11,53,614 sessions, as per a provisional report till 7 a.m. on Saturday.
