Mar 11 2021 This year the Gibraltar maritime sector made a great contribution to the crew changes challenge, offered face to face tuition in its university, had steady business in dry docks, and saw some expansion in services. The International Ship Managers’ Association (InterManager) credits Gibraltar for how well it supported crew changes during COVID. “I have checked with our members and all are singing praises,” says Captain Kuba Szymanski, secretary general of InterManager. “Gibraltar is well suited and geared up to do crew changes. Gibraltar should be thanked for their attitude and support extended to shipping and our seafarers. More leaders like Gibraltar please.”

KSOE Launches Project to Develop International Standard for Hydrogen Vessels

Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), an intermediary holding company of Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, has joined hands with the Korean Register of Shipping to develop the first international standard for hydrogen ships.
KSOE signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on making safety design regulations on hydrogen ships with the Korean Register of Shipping on March 4. The two companies plan to jointly develop the world’s first hydrogen ship standard and submit it to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) by 2022.
In September 2020 the giant container vessel Jacques Saadé, owned by French shipping group CMA CGM, set out on a roughly 80-day maiden voyage from Europe to Asia and back.
There’s nothing unusual in that, except that this brand-new 400-metre-long vessel is the first ultra large container ship to be fuelled entirely by liquefied natural gas (LNG), a low-emission fossil fuel that so far has only powered much smaller vessels.
In the next few years the Jacques Saadé will be joined by eight sister ships. But looking further to the future, the engines on these vessels will be able to run on zero-emission fuels – as they become available in the coming decade. This is a race with profound consequences for the planet, and even Big Oil is joining in. ExxonMobil, for example, is working with Synthetic Genomics to develop algae into a viable biofuel for transport. The goal is to produce 10,000 barrels a day – equivalent to 3.65 million barrels a year – by 2025. “With continued brea
