North Korea Restricts Local Markets, Pushing Sales in State-Owned Stores

AP North Korean authorities are drastically cutting the size of local markets around the country, limiting their business to the sale of farm and livestock products and allowing the sale of other commodities only in state-owned stores, sources in the reclusive country say. The move has further hurt the livelihood of ordinary residents already struggling amid shutdowns of trade along the border with China and other measures aimed at controlling the spread of COVID-19, the sources say. “Beginning this month, markets operating in every district of Pyongyang city have been changed or significantly reduced in size,” one source in the North Korean capital told RFA’s Korean Service on May 26.

North Korean Agricultural Quotas Unrealistic Due to Equipment Shortfalls

KCNA/via Reuters North Korea has ordered its farmers to begin planting crops, but many farms in the country have yet to be plowed due to a severe lack of adequate farming machinery, sources told RFA. During January’s Eighth Party Congress, the central government said that, prior to the coronavirus pandemic, North Korea had been too reliant on China for covering its food shortages, and that too much of its economy was dependent on cross-border trade. When Beijing and Pyongyang closed their border and suspended all trade in January 2020, the North Korean economy came to a near halt. International organizations warned that the country of 23 million people could suffer a severe food crisis.

North Korean Companies Hoard Rare-Earth Elements for Future Trade with China

Reuters North Korean state-run companies have begun hoarding molybdenum ore, causing the price of the high-tech industrial input to spike in a move that suggests that trade with China could resume soon, sources in the country told RFA. Since January 2020, Beijing and Pyongyang closed their 880-mile border and suspended all trade to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The move has had disastrous effects for the North Korean economy, especially for those industries that rely on trade with China for raw materials or as a market to sell goods. Molybdenum is a rare-earth metal with a very small yield that is essential for the manufacture of alloy steel and is used for its electromagnetic and heat-resistant properties in the semiconductor, precision machinery, high-speed train, and aviation industries. North Korea’s supply of molybdenum ore has been off-limits to China during the pandemic.
