Massachusetts Fishing Report – April 22, 2021

With so many taking to groundfishing and having a heck of a time with sweetwater pursuits, the imminent arrival of “you know what” is almost an afterthought! Perusing some of the photos and the variety of what I’m seeing leaves one inescapable conclusion: striped bass can wait!

According to Rod from
Flagg’s Fly and Tackle in Orange, the Quabbin Reservoir season kicked off in fine fashion with cooperative landlocked salmon up to 6 1/2 pounds! Rod’s hand tied Fire Smelt streamers have been killer; in fact he had to cut short our conversation he was so busy tying to meet demand! The wind kept most in close to the boat launch sites but it didn’t matter. Two/three pound lakers are ubiquitous to where they are almost a nuisance with anglers fishing from shore at Gates 16 and 35 catching all the forkies they could handle. Rainbows have been willing from shore at Gate 31.
Just down from Tremonte is
3 Country Bistro, which, as you may have guessed, offers three different types of cuisines Japanese, Korean, and Thai though you’ll also find dishes traditionally found in other Asian countries, including a marvelous Indonesian fried rice. (Their sushi and pad Thai are also very fine.)
Finally, just south of the common is
Roma’s Bakery and Deli, an old-fashioned Italian food spot that’s known in part for their Sicilian pizza slices and their scali bread and is a perfect place to go for takeout.

Woburn Center tends to have the highest concentration of indie restaurants to check out, but several good eateries can also be found both north and south of the downtown area. A couple of local faves reside along Route 38 heading south toward Winchester, including

The Tree Swallows are back in Nahanton Park this week. I saw two Eastern Phoebes this morning â first of the year, or FOY. The grackles returned to town weeks ago, rusty door-hinges creaking at my feeder. As New England wakes from its winter slumber, the birds return, wave by wave, species by species. The woods are already full of woodcocks doing their weird evening interpretive

While meaning no disrespect to hardcore hardwater types, it’s time to mothball the traps and reacquaint yourself with the cast! Dovetailing with that nicely is the continued trout stocking by Masswildlife, although some anglers aren’t waiting and doing just fine with last fall’s fish.
Friend’s fishy photos serve a number of purposes: the altruistic of which could be considered an invite to – “get the heck down here!”. But then there’s the torturous side of those pictures which seem intended to torment as if to say, “I’m catching these and you’re not”! I felt both emotions recently thanks to my buddy Rick from Sandwich as he sent me pics of beautiful brookies that were freshly stocked on the Cape. For those dying to cast, it looks as if the wait is over!

Ways We Are Staying Sane at Coast 93.1
I feel like we have officially arrived in Maine’s deep winter. Every year I am always surprised by how cold it can get on the coast. I grew up out on Long Island in Casco Bay so you think I would be used to
serious cold by now!
Due to the pandemic, and current wind chill, it’s really easy to get in a cycle of being bored in the house. SO I asked everyone around the station what they have been doing to keep themselves safe, entertained, and sane.
