PALM COAST A group of mostly Cuban-Americans gathered in Central Park Thursday evening to show support for the protesters in Cuba demanding democratic reforms.
“We’re here to speak up for them, doing for them what they can’t do for themselves without risking their life,” said Raquel Levy, a Cuban-American personal injury attorney in Palm Coast. “I was fortunate enough to be born here, but there’s still a part of our heart that hurts because we know what our family went through and it’s the same thing that these people are going through.”
Demonstrations began in Cuba around July 11 in response to deteriorating living conditions, lack of basic goods and services, and the increase in coronavirus cases. Since then at least one death has been reported and many people are believed to be missing.
