Train A MAN has been given a travel ban after he was convicted of committing a sex act on himself during a rail journey. Kevin Whittam, aged 59, of Hallstead Grove, Little Hulton, had denied outraging public decency whilst travelling on a train between Lancaster and Preston on October 10, 2019, but was convicted following a trial at Wigan Magistrates’ Court. He was fined £100 and ordered to participate in an offenders’ programme for 34 days plus 15 days of rehabilitation activities as well as £390 in costs and charge. Whittam was made subject to a sexual harm prevention order for five years during which he is banned from approaching or communicating with children and is prohibited from travelling on any railway in England or Wales, whilst under the influence of any intoxicating substance or liquor.

A Salford shopkeeper continued to sell illegal and counterfeit cigarettes despite two previous raids by trading standards officers, a court has heard.
Officers found counterfeit cigarettes and empty cartons at the Little Hulton shop on the day officers went to caution him for the two previous offences.
Shujat Ali, owner of Super Discount Store, Hulton District Centre, pleaded guilty to two offences under the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016 and the Trade Marks Act 1994 for possession of counterfeit cigarettes when he appeared at Salford and Manchester Magistrates Court.
The court heard that trading standards officers and a specialist dog handler visited the business on 29 May 2019 and seized illicit tobacco worth £7,000. They recovered 11,000 cigarettes, 7,780 of which were counterfeit and 107 pouches of hand-rolling tobacco, six of which were counterfeit.

He is visiting professor in ‘Worktown Studies’ at the University of Bolton and author of several books on Lancashire history You’d have to be of a certain age to remember Bolton’s ‘other’ railway, which ran from Great Moor Street station, now part of Morrison’s car park. It was the terminus for two lines – the Leigh and Kenyon Junction line, via Chequerbent, and the route to Manchester via Walkden and Little Hulton. The Leigh line opened as early as 1828 and pre-dates even the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The Bolton and Leigh Railway was the first ‘public’ railway in Lancashire and is of huge historical importance, engineered by George Stephenson and projected as early as 1824.
