As a little girl growing up in Africa and Paris,
Mawa McQueen always saw the world differently. When she thought about her future, she was never content to settle for the opportunities readily available to her and other immigrants in France, jobs like housekeeping or looking after children. She wanted more. “I was always a rebellious person you can’t put me here and say, ‘This is it,’” McQueen says. “It’s something I never understood, why I always had the desire to get out of there. I always felt so odd, like why do I have this thing inside of me that says I have to be different and do differently? Why am I not like the shy quiet girl and just do what I’m supposed to do?”

With a new initiative to digitize vintage footage of old Aspen and a new streaming version of its popular Retro Film Series online, the Aspen Historical Society is taking viewers into a time machine this winter.
The eight-part weekly series runs through mid-March on Vimeo through March 9, buffeted by many newly digitzed and long unseen films.
In addition to the unearthed footage screening at the series, the archival team at the Historical Society is working to digitize much more for future viewing. The nonprofit recently earned grants from the Fred and Elli Iselin Foundation and the Colorado Historical Records Advisory Board.

The award comes after the hotel had closed for three months amid the COVID-19 pandemic that reduced travel to little more than a trickle and forced cancellation of many meetings, including the Space Symposium that is held annually at the resort. To be recognized by Forbes Travel Guide this year is especially meaningful, Broadmoor President and CEO Jack Damioli said Tuesday in a news release. We ve learned how nimble we are and that we can adjust to our environment and conditions in ways we never imagined, all while still providing exceptional service and memorable experiences at our unique world-class destination.
