In Greek mythology, at the Winter Solstice, there is a brief calm for the Halcyon Day, and this was the experience of the crew on the Limerick ketch Ilen as they headed away on Monday evening, after a busy two weeks in Ringsend which had included a series of courses in Dublin Bay for the Sailing into Wellness programme.
The time honoured tradition of the New Year s Day arrow ceremony at Hook Head; one which goes back to 1687, will not go ahead in its usual format this year due to Covid-19 social distancing restrictions.
Every year archers join An Cathaoirleach of New Ross Municipal District to fire arrows into the estuary, claiming dominion over the waters.
Councillor Michael Whelan confirmed that the traditional ceremony cannot go ahead this year. Unfortunately we cannot do the ceremony as it would attract people in numbers to Hook Head. The annual sunrise tour at Hook Lighthouse also can t go ahead.
The ancient tradition dates back to 1687 when the Mayor and the corporation of New Ross Town Council claimed their authority over the Tower and its waters by travelling to the point of the Hook and shooting an arrow into the sea.
