Multiple organizations in Cumberland County are helping tell the county’s history through the Freedmen’s Bureau Transcription Project.  The Freedmen’s Bureau Transcription Project is an effort to transcribe the Freedmen’s Bureau records. The bureau was a government department that was in charge of supporting previously enslaved persons in their transition to freedom and citizenship, according to a news release from the Cumberland County library. The Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of African American History and Culture has worked with the North Carolina African American Heritage Commission and the State Library of North Carolina to shine a light on a hidden part of history in the Freedmen’s Bureau, formally known as the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, the release said.
