Essendon coach Ben Rutten has explained how his side ran out of interchange rotations with five minutes left to play in Sundayâs loss to Sydney.
Dylan Shiel and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti were left stranded on the bench as the Bombers attempted their late fightback, having already used 75 rotations.
Rutten pointed to a late injury suffered by Jayden Laverde as well as general player exhaustion from the fast pace of play for the miscalculation.
âItâs a bit unlike us. We havenât got that close to our rotation cap in a heap of games,â he told reporters on Wednesday.

Positive: Schoenberg shows up
There weren’t many Adelaide players who could hold their head high after the lacklustre 63-point loss to Essendon.
One Crow who did his bit was youngster Harry Schoenberg.
In just his 23rd game, the 20-year-old was one of only a few who led the way with 20 disposals and a team-high seven tackles, four clearances and one of his side’s two goals.
