For an athlete, having their name pronounced incorrectly on either an in-arena feed (where they can hear it live) or on a broadcast feed (where they find out about it later) can be quite a blow. It’s maybe particularly notable in the professional ranks, where athletes have worked long and hard to get there, only to have their names still not recognized properly. Many leagues have tried to prevent this with the issuing of pronunciation guides to announcers, but that doesn’t always work perfectly. And there seems to be a particular issue with that at the moment in the WNBA, as Britni de la Cretaz relays in a piece for Vice:

Couldn’t bring it all the way home. The New York Liberty faced the Atlanta Dream on Saturday afternoon hoping to remain undefeated at home. The game went into overtime, but Atlanta was able to pull out the W by three points. Just like our friends at Madison Square Garden, Atlanta basketball teams spent the weekend dominating the hometown team. Well, except for the Nets.
The opponent tonight in Brooklyn will be the Las Vegas Aces. The Aces are one of the favorites to win the title this year and have gotten off to a good start. Their three game winning streak was snapped on Tuesday night thanks to the Connecticut Sun. Vegas wraps up their three game road trip with a game in DC against the Washington Mystics on Saturday afternoon.
One more time. The New York Liberty came back home to take on the Dallas Wings in front of a happy Barclays Center. The team gave them even more to cheer about as they pulled away late and came.

The Skinny
The Liberty emerged from their weekend two-game set versus the Fever with a clean 2-0 record thanks to Betnijah Lany, Sabrina Ionescu and surprisingly strong contributions from rookie Michaela Onyenwere right out of the gate. The trio combined to account for a large portion of New York s scoring and Ionescu started the season strong with a double-double. Even so, the weekend success draws minimal fantasy value for the Liberty against a tough Lynx defense. The one area where Minnesota struggled a bit was on the boards with Napheesa Collier still unavailable and Natalie Achonwa now questionable with a knee injury. Unfortunately, that s also the area where New York is at its weakest with Natasha Howard still unavailable. The return of Kiah Stokes should ease the burden slightly, as she provides a bit more experience and depth to a thin Liberty frontcourt. Her return likely draws minutes away from Kylee Shook on Tuesday.
It took the WNBA until July 27th of its third season to see a triple-double. It took Sabrina Ionescu of the New York Liberty six games as she accomplished the feat Tuesday night in a win over the Minnesota Lynx.
