Early Signing Day for Michigan Big Schools Brings In Top Talent
In the first dip into the 2021 college football season, the NCAA s Football Bowl Subdivision held their holiday - National Signing Day - for the top talents nationally to sign with the big programs.
The day for the five universities in Michigan that take part is the best opportunity to get the best talent in the state and from other football-prominent states. Mid-December has replaced the first Wednesday in February as college football s most exciting off the field day of the year. It s estimated that three-fourths of the nation s signees will use the early signing period rather than wait until February.
That scenario has changed a lot from the late 1970s when I started covering recruiting. One of my biggest thrills was in 1979 when the late, great Reggie White signed with Tennessee. There was no big signing ceremony. Only Reggie, his mom and dad, former Tennessee coach Bobby Jackson, Channel 12 photographer Larry Sky Walker, and yours truly were in attendance in Reggie s home in St. Elmo as he put h
