Short circuit
We purchased a new Mini Electric. They advertise a 140-mile range, but the most we can achieve is 90 miles. Is this a fault, or is the advertising misleading? TE
The official WLTP range is “up to 145 miles”. You won’t get that in winter because the ambient temperature is too low for the battery to work at peak efficiency and also because you’ll use more accessories that are powered by the battery, such as the heater. Driving carefully you should get closer to 140 miles in the summer.

Circuit bored
My wife and I bought an electric Kia e-Niro, which at 75 felt like a brave thing to do. I have no range anxiety as, with up to 280 miles on a full charge, I can easily visit friends and family and return to our wallbox charger at home. My biggest irritation is charging away from home. For some reason, each provider has its own method of selling you electricity and it seems that I need to have a different app for each brand of charger. I expected simply to drive up to a charger, plug in, tap something with my credit card and go for a coffee while it charged. Why do they make it so difficult? CS

Dependable Deutschland?
Owned from new, my 13-year-old BMW 118i has been superb but it’s time for a newer model. Reports of unreliability with the latest 1-series make me wonder whether I should consider something else. I thought about a Mini Cooper, Countryman or Clubman, but the differences are very confusing – and they are also made by BMW. I travel about 6,000 miles a year and need an automatic gearbox. What do you suggest? SC
