  Dec 22, 2020 02:07:42 PM Villagers of Yaro on Kia Island had to hide their children inside cupboards as they had nowhere to run for safety as severe tropical cyclone Yasa wreaked on Thursday night. Only two houses are left standing while the other 45 homes have been completely destroyed by the category five cyclone. Yaro villager Kaliova Masau said he will never forget what they experienced during TC Yasa as they had never witnessed any natural disaster as strong as this and the devastation caused will see them recover after quite some time. He said the villagers are only left with the clothes that they were wearing during the cyclone and everything else has been lost.

Kia Island is one of the worst affected areas after Cyclone Yasa. The Australian TC Yasa relief supplies arrived on Kia Island yesterday. Kia Island Nurse Losana Yabaki says after the cyclone, they were in urgent need of food and water but they are so fortunate that the very next day they received assistance from some of their relatives overseas, Red Cross and Vodafone. The NDMO also dropped off supplies over the weekend.

Nukubati residents, Keira Rose and Lara Bourke who visited the island with their group of volunteers from Nukubati say there are 45 houses in Yaro Village however only 2 are left standing after TC Yasa.
